Once again we gather in a spirit of fond remembrance for our dear sister Georgianna Grobman, who went to be with the Lord this week. I’ve been a back-row bass for a while now, and she was a front-row soprano, so per most seating charts we spent a lot of choir rehearsals pretty near to each other. Whenever she’d find something she loved in our music, or found something particularly irritating, I’d usually overhear it, and that was fun – she was a great choir neighbor, and I’ll miss her quite a bit.
Georgianna truly loved to sing in this choir, even though she hated these cushioned chairs – for a while my side job was to get to rehearsal a little early, grab her one of the hard plastic chairs from behind the piano, and put it in her spot. That truly was no big deal, but she made it a big deal. She thanked me plenty – it was our little thing, and I’ll miss that too.
These past few days, I’ve been listening a bit to this past spring’s Brahms Requiem, and it has been a blessing. The text we sang has provided comfort. “The redeemed of the Lord shall return again and come rejoicing unto Zion. Joy everlasting upon their heads shall be. Joy and gladness, these shall be their portion. And tears and sighing shall flee from them. Nor pain nor grief shall nigh them come. Blest are they.”
2nd Corinthians chapter 1 tells us, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in ANY trouble, with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” In this time of remembrance, may WE be comforted by God’s promise, and may what we offer through OUR ministry provide that same comfort to others. Let’s pray.
Father God, we thank you for this weekend’s celebration of hymns – as we sing along with the saints of old, we know that up in heaven, Georgianna and Allan are singing along with us. “Blest are they that dwell within thy house; they praise thy name evermore! They rest from their labors, and their works follow after them.” Lord, WE are honored to follow after them, and we thank you for that promise. Be with us tonight, God. Amen.
